The 750-tonne Emmaus church had to be lifted on to a giant undulating platform with the aim of making a 12 kilometre journey to Borna. The church needed to be moved as its existing location in the village of Heuersdorf had it positioned over extensive deposits of lignite, or brown coal which needed to be excavated.

Measuring 19.6 meters tall and 14.5 meters long, the Church dates from the Middle Ages and was first mentioned in historical documents in 1297. Built of stone in Romanesque style, it has a steeply pitched roof and a small black tower on the roofline, making it somewhat of an unusual sight on the road!
